Rush Hour Concerts at St. James Cathedral

Concert Customs

Live performances are framed by silence – the silence is to a musician what a blank canvas is to a painter. You as a listener have an important role in today’s live performance: you give energy to the performers by the level of your involvement and focusing in the sound. Cell phones and other electronic devices tend to disrupt that focus, so please turn off all devices until we end our musical journey together.

Applause is a curious exception to the silence… it is thought to have originated in the land from where much classical music came – Italy – as a way of showing approval or enthusiasm for an experience or person. Applause traditionally frames a classical music concert. If a piece has several movements (smaller pieces within it), it is traditional not to break the mood with applause until the whole piece is over.

Because the concert takes place within the Cathedral, many people wonder if there are particular church customs that they need to follow. Relax – there is no need to do anything but be yourself!

If you have any questions or require assistance, please see an usher. Enjoy the music.
